The robustness and simplicity of proportional-integral-derivative (PID) controllers has ensured their continued and widespread use in industry. New techniques have been developed to allow PID controllers to match the performance of more advanced controller designs where the advanced training and computing power necessary make such designs impractical. To the industrial engineer having to implement such new techniques, the academic work in the field has previously appeared fragmented and rather incoherent. This has resulted in a smaller uptake of novel PID-associated techniques in industry than is desirable. PID Controller Design aims to rectify this problem by presenting a co-ordinated overview of recent research by fulfilling the following criteria: Presents a coherent framework for recent PID controller research. Reviews and assesses some of the more recent PID tuning methods. Proposes novel PID control solutions for multivariable processes. Uses a common set of control design problems in the comparative assessments presented. Usefule to academics needing a clear idea of where the filed of PID control currently stands and to industry-based engineers wanting a better understanding of what is involved in the step to a new generation of PID controller.
