This manual of inorganic preparations grew out of a one-quarter lecture course in descriptive inorganic chemistry which the author gave for a number of years at Northwestern University. Laboratory work (three hours a week) was optional. The course, intended primarily for senior and junior undergraduates, was designed to give a more detailed account of inorganic chemistry than that of the freshman year and to prepare the student for an advanced graduate course in structural inorganic chemistry and valence theory. Since many students who had not had a descriptive survey came to Northwestern to do graduate work, these graduate students also took this course and often elected to do the laboratory work.
